Description

These Salisbury Steaks in Horseradish Parmesan Sauce feature juicy, seasoned ground beef patties served in a rich, creamy sauce with Parmesan cheese, garlic, onions, thyme, and a touch of horseradish. A comforting skillet dinner perfect with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1.6 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For the Horseradish Parmesan Sauce:

  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish
  • Chopped chives for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, dried onion, egg, and Dijon mustard. Mix gently until combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into evenly sized oval patties.
  3. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and brown on both sides. Transfer to a plate.
  4. In the same skillet, add the diced yellow onion and cook until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook briefly until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the sauce salt, black pepper, and dried thyme.
  6. Pour in the beef or chicken broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release the browned bits.
  7. Add the heavy cream and stir to combine.
  8. Add the grated Parmesan cheese and horseradish. Stir gently until the cheese melts and the sauce becomes smooth.
  9. Return the browned Salisbury steaks to the skillet. Spoon sauce over the patties and simmer gently until the beef is fully cooked, reaching an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  10. Garnish with chopped chives and serve warm with the creamy sauce.

Notes

  • Mix the ground beef gently to keep the patties tender.
  • Use freshly grated Parmesan for a smoother sauce.
  • Keep the sauce at a gentle simmer to prevent the cream from separating.
  • Check that the thickest part of each patty reaches 160°F (71°C).
